Aloha, This is Keiwan!

Hello! My name is Keiwan (pronounced K1: it is a Persian word for Saturn!).

Officially, I am an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University. Unofficially? I call myself a data philosopher because I believe most problems don’t live in the data, they hide behind it, buried within the underlying structures and mechanisms. I am less interested in predicting and more curious about finding out. I teach courses on AI, Data Mining, and Digital Transformation, where the goal is not to build smarter tools but to ask smarter questions.

My research lives at the intersection of education, sustainability, and complexity. I am especially interested in how we prepare people, not just workers, for a world full of wicked problems, unintended consequences, and shiny distractions. Understanding reality, to me, means going beyond what is visible to uncover the forces, systems, and histories quietly shaping what we see.

Outside the classroom, I wander through other domains of curiosity: I photograph the world, cook obsessively (sometimes successfully), and enjoy long conversations about food, culture, identity, and the absurdity of modern life. I am fascinated by what lies beneath the surface, whether it is a social structure, a spice blend, or the real reason your pasta sauce does not taste quite right.

This site is where all those threads come together. You will find a mix of research reflections, personal essays, recipes, photos, and philosophical detours. If you are into systems, stories, spice, and thinking a few layers deeper, welcome. You are in good company. I occasionally will reveal my Voyage Verbs.
